Vale Dr Erica Smyth AC

The Australian minerals industry is mourning the death of Dr Erica Smyth AC, a pioneering geologist and leader with an unwavering and passionate commitment to our nation’s world-class minerals and petroleum industries.

From humble beginnings cleaning crayfish tails during school holidays to senior roles at BHP and Woodside, Dr Smyth was a tireless advocate for research, innovation, and community service, particularly in uranium exploration where she served as Chair of Toro Energy and as a Non-Executive Director at ANSTO and Emeco Holdings, and directorships with the Commonwealth Government’s Minerals Exploration CRC Program.

In recognition of her extraordinary service, Erica was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2018.

On behalf of the Australian minerals industry, we extend our deepest condolences to Erica’s family and friends and honour her life, her achievements, and her enduring impact.
