The Minerals Council of Australia – Northern Territory Division (MCA NT) represents the interests of member companies operating, exploring and providing services to the minerals industry in the Northern Territory (NT).
The MCA NT advocates policies and practices to deliver a safe, profitable and environmentally responsible industry that is attuned to community needs and expectations.
The NT has some of Australia’s largest deposits of minerals including bauxite, gold, uranium and phosphate as well as critical minerals such as lithium, rare earths and zinc.
The NT has a successful and proud track record for mining. The NT resources sector is critical to securing the Territory’s long-term economic success, particularly in the regions. Mining is a significant contributor to the NT economy in 2024-25 with royalties providing 28% of GSP at a total of $218 million providing over 3,500 high wage regional jobs and providing support for communities.
The NT has 18 developing mineral projects representing a combined estimated capital expenditure of $8.7 billion with the potential to create 3,100 jobs. Mineral exploration is also strong across the Territory at over $200 million in 2023. Significant growth in critical minerals such as copper, lithium, rare earths and base metals has potential to develop into new future mine projects.
The MCA NT works on behalf of our members to ensure that the Territory’s resources sector is globally competitive and any hurdles preventing sustainable and responsible growth in the sector are identified and eliminated. MCA NT maintains positive relationships with decision-makers, provides opportunities for information exchange and promotes best practice through a range of external activities.
