Celebrating International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

More and more women have chosen to make their careers in Australian mining.

Over the last 15 years, there has been a fivefold increase in the number of female managers in the mining industry and it is expected many more will follow in the years to come.

The industry has some of the best and brightest talent across Australia and it makes sure to celebrate women’s achievements through the Women in Resources National Awards.

The winners demonstrate the diverse careers available to women in the sector and the industry’s commitment to attract, train, encourage and promote women.

At the same time, MCA member companies are also working hard to ensure a diverse, respected and safe workforce.

In 2016, BHP set its goal to achieve gender balance by 2025. Today, women make up the majority of managers on its executive leadership team.

At Rio Tinto, 58 per cent of its 2021 graduate intake were women.

And gold miner St Barbara has received the Workplace Gender Equality Agency Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation for seven consecutive years.

There are so many ways in which the industry celebrates women’s achievements, raises awareness against bias and takes action for equality.

The mining industry is committed to creating a culture that encourages people to bring their whole self to work where they feel safe, valued and respected.

Happy International Women’s Day!
